Offshore. A word conveying the notions of physical distance, of a working platform, of an insular collective. This title prompted the artists to create on a shared territory that becomes inseparable from their work. A collective exhibition in the full itinerant and evolutionary meaning of the term. Contacted by the Ricard society to produce the 2005 exhibition of young French artists (an event that this society has been organizing yearly for 7 years), the art critic and curator Jean-Max Colard developed the project Offshore. It consists of a platform of approximately 20 square meters, upon and around which several artists were invited to intervene on the principle of territorial cohabitation. After its presentation at the Paul Ricard space in Paris in autumn 2005 and at the capc Museum of contemporary art in Bordeaux in the winter, the exhibition is now hosted by attitudes, were it will be adapted to our space. As the curator's idea is to integrate a new artist at each presentation of Offshore, we asked Alexia Turlin to take part in the project during its stay in Geneva. We regard this project as an original and powerful proposal in the often problematic landscape of collective exhibitions. Besides, this notion will also be the subject of a public debate between Jean-Max Colard and Samuel Herzog (art critic and journalist at NZZ) on Friday, 5th May. Offshore is realised with the support of Espace Paul Ricard, Paris.
